Cameras in New Jersey Jitneys Valuable to Law Enforcement

December 13, 2011

Surveillance cameras installed in Atlantic City, N.J.,’s jitneys a year ago have proved to be a valuable tool for law enforcement.

One camera caught a fatal hit-and-run accident last weekend. The accident initially was blamed on the jitney driver, but surveillance footage showed it was a taxi that struck the 88-year-old woman.

The head of the Jitney Association says the cameras were installed in the 190 driver-owned buses at a cost of about $200,000. Tom Woodruff tells The Press of Atlantic City that cameras have helped cleared jitney drivers in three accidents.

In another incident, a camera caught a man leaving a gun on the floor of a jitney. And in August, several people were exposed for falsely claiming they were on a jitney that was involved in an accident.
