University of South Florida and Orlando Police Team up for Study

Researchers at the University of South Florida are teaming up with the Orlando Police Department for a long-term study on officers’ actions.

Fifty officers will wear tiny cameras in places like their sunglasses, collars and caps to provide critical perspective about their daily interactions and decisions. Fifty other officers in the study will not wear the cameras.

Chief Paul Rooney is considering permanently adding the equipment to his arsenal, but wanted more details before he made a decision. The cameras can cost $200 to $400 a piece.

Police departments across the country are increasingly using the cameras to provide valuable first-hand accounts and investigate issues such as use of force.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Taser International is providing the cameras to the department.
