New York Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the federal government to reimburse Long Island schools district for transportation costs for students displaced by Sandy.
He says over a dozen Long Island school districts have spent more than $1 million to provide transportation to some 1,000 displaced students.
Schumer says the extra costs are eating into schools’ budgets.
The senator says he’ll call on the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force to find ways to reimburse the school districts.
By law, school districts must provide transportation to students displaced up to 50 miles by the storm.
