New York City taxi inspectors seized 5,776 illegal livery cars last year.
The Daily News says that’s more than triple the number confiscated the previous year.
The chairman of the Taxi and Limousine Commission says the rogue drivers could have underinsured, inadequate vehicles.
The TLC inspects authorized livery cars for defects. It sets minimum insurance levels for accidents involving passenger injuries.
Authorized drivers are required to take a defensive driving course. They have to get drug tests and clear a criminal background check.
The increase in vehicle seizures is partly due to the hiring of 100 more inspectors last year.
