University of Rhode Island Studies Impact of 2011 Japanese Tsunami

Students and faculty from the University of Rhode Island have had a close-up look at the devastation caused by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Seven URI students spent 10 days in Japan in August investigating the physical and social impact of the tsunami as part of a class project on community responses to disaster.

The class is a partnership between the university and the University of Tokyo and is taught by professors from both schools.

The March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami left nearly 20,000 dead or missing and left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.
