The CEO of outdoors outfitter L.L. Bean has lost a legal battle with his neighbors over a stone wall and cedar stockade fence on his waterfront property in Cumberland.
Maine’s highest court sided with his neighbors in a three-year dispute and ordered L.L. Bean President and Chief Executive Chris McCormick to take the wall and fence down within 30 days.
The neighbors claimed the wall and fence that run along an easement they used to access the water changed the path’s course and made it impossible to maneuver vehicles on it.
The Portland Press Herald reports that the Maine Supreme Judicial ruled that relocation of the easement would have to provide “equally as convenient and beneficial” access to the ocean as existed previously.
McCormick’s lawyer did not return messages.
