Connecticut Bar Agrees to Penalty in Crash Case

A Connecticut bar has agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and have its license suspended for 10 days for serving two customers who were killed in a motorcycle crash after leaving the tavern.

John Suchy, director of the state Liquor Control Division, said Tuesday that the agency accepted John’s Mystic River Tavern’s offer of a compromise instead of a hearing that would have determined a penalty.

Lenn Eller of Ledyard crashed his motorcycle soon after leaving the tavern in May 2008, killing himself and passenger Morna Marolda. Police say Eller’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit for driving.

Suchy tells The Day of New London that he considers the penalty fair.

The bar’s owner could not be reached for comment.
