Philadelphia Bar Settles Suit Alleging Discrimination

December 2, 2010

A popular Philadelphia pub has settled a lawsuit filed by one of its bartenders who claimed it discouraged nonwhite customers from visiting.

A consent order filed in federal court requires McFadden’s Restaurant and Bar to create equal-opportunity employment policies and mandatory non-discrimination training programs.

The Philadelphia Daily News also reports Tuesday that a confidential hot line will be established for employees to report complaints.

Part-time bartender and lawyer Michael Bolden alleged bias in a lawsuit filed earlier this month. The suit claimed in part that a manager seeking to discourage African-American patrons texted a supervisor, “We don’t want black people we are a white bar!”

Both sides said in a joint statement that the manager has been fired.
