The U.S. Attorney’s office and the FBI in Philadelphia say 17 people are facing charges of mail fraud in what authorities call a scheme that defrauded insurance companies of more than $630,000.
Authorities on Friday said a chiropractor and attorney are among those charged in a scam that allegedly involved filing false accident reports to receive free medical care and get civil settlement payment.
Court records claim that a then-active Philadelphia police officer recruited fake drivers and passengers for fictitious accidents.
Authorities say the bogus victims would be referred to chiropractors and attorneys who would get kickbacks from lawsuits.
