Coast Guard Monitoring Oil Spill in New York Harbor

The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring the cleanup of an estimated 300 gallons of oil that spilled into the waters off New York Harbor on Monday.

Coast Guard officials say it happened while a barge was transferring the oil to a freight ship about one mile northeast of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Bayridge Anchorage.

Officials say crews immediately deployed an absorbent boom between the barge and the ship.

The Coast Guard sent two pollution investigators to the scene, who reported that most of the oil had been trapped between the two vessels.

A Coast Guard overflight is schedule for first light to assess any shoreline impact.
