Virginia State Police are teaming up with organizations that represent commercial drivers in an effort to reduce the number of traffic accidents involving those vehicles.
State police, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced Operation Safe Driver, a weeklong campaign involving enforcement, education and awareness.
State police will inspect commercial drivers’ log books, hours of service and licensing. Last year, nearly 600 of the more than 3,000 commercial drivers inspected were put out of service because of similar inspections.
Captain Ronald Sanders says there have been more than 2,100 commercial vehicle crashes on Virginia’s highways this year, most often due to driver error.
