Virginia Swamp Fire Finally Out after 121 days, $11 Million

October 13, 2008

A fire in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is finally out after burning for 121 days and costing more than $11 million to extinguish.

Refuge manager Chris Lowie said no smoke or fire was seen by refuge officials during flights over the swamp last week and this week.

However, Lowie said parts of the refuge remain closed because of falling trees, poor footing and other hazards.

The blaze started June 9 when logging equipment caught fire.

The refuge covers 111,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina.
