A 14-year-old boy who apparently stole his brother’s car and went for a joyride with his friends in Long Island has crashed, making the car burst into flames and seriously injuring two children in the back seat.
Seventeen-year-old David Berrios says his brother Elias Berrios swiped the car keys from his bedroom while he was doing laundry at their family’s Central Islip (EYE’-slip) home. He says he jumped over a fence when he noticed his car was missing and then saw it engulfed in flames nearby.
Suffolk County police say there were six children under age 16 in the car when it crashed into a fire hydrant and then a tree. Police say five of the children had to be hospitalized.
No charges have been reported.
