Virginia is getting more than $259,000 in mine health and safety grants.
The funds come from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration.
The agency says it has announced more than $8.2 million in grants this year, up from $7.9 million last year.
Virginia will use the funds to provide federally mandated training to miners. That includes training of miners working in surface and underground coal mines as well as metal and nonmetal mines. It also includes miners that do shell dredging or work at surface stone, sand and gravel mining operations.
