Appeal Likely in $1.75 Million New Hampshire Medical Malpractice Case

A Concord (New Hampshire) surgeon ordered to pay $1.75 million to a man who lost his sight during surgery for a broken leg plans to appeal the jury’s decision.

A Merrimack County Superior Court jury last week sided with Randolph Hinz of Warner, who sued Doctor Eric Leefmans for malpractice after a 2003 car crash. Hinz argued that because Leefmans failed to give him blood during the surgery, oxygen was cut off to the nerves that control sight and he ended up going blind.

But the surgeon’s lawyers say their client provided excellent care for Hinz and that the blindness was not caused by the surgeon’s actions.
