Erie Insurance Says It Handled Former Judge’s Claim Correctly

January 8, 2008

Erie Insurance Group says an internal investigation shows the company properly handled a claim by former Pennsylvania Superior Court Judge Michael Joyce.

Joyce has been indicted on charges he bilked Erie Insurance and State Farm out of $440,000 in an automobile accident claim. Joyce and his attorneys say he did nothing wrong.

Erie Insurance says the Jones Day law firm completed the internal review and determined the company did nothing wrong in paying Joyce $390,000 for neck and back injuries in a 2001 car accident. State Farm, which insured the other driver, paid Joyce $50,000.

Federal prosecutors don’t say the insurance companies did anything wrong. They say Joyce submitted false information about the extent of his injuries.
