    “Dear JackAss,
The Mexican people were in several states before whitey and blackey migrated to the west and southwest. There is no way Hispanics deserve a turn as you say, unless it would be to teach you about American history.”

    You wrote back;
“You need to check YOUR history. Peoples came first across the Bering Strait, then came Africans, then the Vikings, and everyone else and America is named after Amerigo Vespucci – an Italian. Blacks built this country and unfortunately Whites directed them to throught the system of slavery. At least Hispanics are getting paid for their labor. You’re doggone right that it’s your turn to be a viable LEGAL slice of the American pie.”

Actually, the Mexicans were here before the blacks. Here are three history exam questions for you.

1)In 1836 1500 Mexican troops slaughtered 186 primarily white Tejano fighters in San Antonio, Tejas (now Texas)at the Alamo for trying to take over formerly Mexican property.
    TRUE or FALSE?

2)3 weeks later at San Jacinto, TX 175 Tejanos killed 670 Mexican soldiers on siesta. The primarily white fighters were really pissed about their freinds getting killed at the Alamo a few weeks prior. The white folks had come to Tejas which was owned and run by (multiple choice)
a)negro slaves sold by other negros in Africa and brought to North America by evil white folks from Europe.
    b)the Italian Mafia
    c)Columbus
    d)the nation of Mexico

3)The Mexican/American war was fought by Americans who wanted to expand their country from one coast to the other and felt like it was their destiny to do so.

According to this articla & all the news I have seen on this subject, Gov Spitzer says this new policy will lower the number of illegal immigrants who are driving without licenses and car insurance or with fake licenses because it will “Bring ‘people out of the shadows’ into American society.” What I don’t understand is why anyone would think that a person who is living here illegally–and no matter what your opinion is, you have to acknowledge the key word is illegally–is going to run out & get a license & insurance just because they “can.” People I have met who say they have friends/relatives who are illegal say the people here illegally don’t trust many govt programs anyway, so the liklihood is that they will just continue to go on the way they are. Personally, I think Gov Spitzer and other politicians would be serving us better if they worked on ways to make people here illegally somehow become legal–whether temporarily or permanently–so they can pay taxes and be accountable for their actions, but that is just my opinion.

Two Words for illegal aliens – GET LEGAL. Texas History teacher,

I don’t care what you think – everything’s supposedly bigger in Texas and that includes the egos too I guess. History books are biased in and of themselves and having lived in the South all my life all say different things to make that particular state look better. Really the main argument is CITIZENSHIP. Why should others have to bother to go through the motions when millions upon millions of Hispanics will have the slate wiped clean for them. It’s a slap in the face for native born and naturalized citizens. We might as well give Mahmoud an honored seat at the table of citizenship while we’re at it. Whether it’s the trucking situation (my pa is a former trucker) or the licenses the situation is going to hell in a hand basket. Either work out the citizenship or let people have work visas or whatever angle but don’t ENABLE people in the meantime. It’s become such a monster our government doesn’t know what the heck to do. You have the situation where some family members are here and others are in Mexico and some Hispanics say we want all of our family here too. PLEASE! You either should have all come over at the same time or not at all.

My former neighors were Mexicans from Yucatan Peninsula. They kept us up at night working but they became citizens as soon as they could as well as several other family members. I have hardly any problems as long as you share the tax load with me and everything else. So I am not a bigot or a jacka**. When you have to go there you degrade your own self. If people post thought provoking ideas then others want to break out the “I know some Mexicans and they can cook and do all this other cool stuff and have no problem with them and you should apologize”…

    SHUT UP!!!

I want to agree with the others that Mexicans settled Texas, California, and most of the other southwestern states long before the white man or black man moved here. Also saying illegals at least get paid for their work is akin to saying slaves received proper room and board, medical and dental, retirement planning. I am sorry but you sound very bigoted in your comments about Hispanics. By the way my family came here legally and we are citizens. We think the illegal aliens are criminals and should be rounded up and deported as soon as possible. This includes Mexicans, Blacks, Whites, Arabs, Russians, etc. etc. etc.

When they show up at driver licensing offices and are handed their shiny new licenses, have officers from Immigration outside to arrest them & deport them after stripping them of their shiny new licenses. This is BS…illegals need to earn citizenship before they are allowed the ‘perks’ of living here. And yes, a driver’s license is a perk, not a right.

How will insurance prices be lowered…I certainly think there will be a lot more UM/UIM premium generated, but I don’t forsee premium reductions.

By the way Sami…great post. You said everything I wanted to say.

I had some friends who were illegal mexicans, they were great people and great friends. They were here simply for a better life. However, the thing that bugged me and that bugs me with all illegals is they claim to want citizenship but they make no effort to learn our language and clearly don’t want to pay our taxes, yet expect everything in return. They go to demonstrations and wave the Mexican flag while disrespecting the American flag, yet all the while they say they want to be here legally. Why would we let people even become citizens who don’t show us any respect as a country? I’m proud to be American and very offended by those who disrespect the greatest country on earth, yet at the same time claim they have a right to be here. Take down your mexican flag, take those goofy mexican stickers and Catholic statues off of your cars, and learn the English language. We owe you nothing, either go home or make an effort to become a proper citizen and EARN your right to live in this country.

I think that this is a great article. Beeing an American Citizen, I completely agree with this article. I was illegal once in this country and it was very hard for my family and I to get around, we had to depend on alot of people to help us with things such as grocery shopping. This will give illegal immigrants the opportunity to have some kind of freedom in this country, they are here to help us, why shouldn’t we help them?

Sonia — you are missing the point — you are here illegally — why should you get a document that says you can drive legally? I sincerely believe that 99.9% of the population of the USA wants to help out the people from other countries that just want to make a better life for themselves — the problem is that it is reported that 11 million people are are here illegally — there comes a time to say STOP it is ENOUGH. We struggle to educate our children and the children of illegals — when is enough, enough? People that come here illegally should not expect to have the same privileges as citizens.

All we can do as ordinary people is help where we can & vote for leadership that actually represents us, the voters!

As far as granting any illegal immigrant anything that shows their legality to drive, I think the person must already have a drivers license from another country & the US issued license can be an added part to the existing. This way the US License attachment can be renewed every 6 months, thus creating records of those here, providing last known addresses, etc… so that tracing those here illegally can be easier for authorities. It might not be a bad idea to go ahead & fingerprint them when they get the license attachment… might help out at some crime labs around the country.

I’m not saying anything derogatory about any particular race, just looking to see how we as a nation might benefit from the idea of it all…

It’s better than not having a clue who they are & finding out from others that some MS-13 members have fled after their most recent crime spree & now, out of the country, are not facing the charges for their criminal behavior here – but if they had a US License attachment then when they show back up – lock em up & make them face the US Judge & Jury for their punishment for their crimes…. Try them in Texas & let’s put the sorry murdering thievs on death row for about 30 days max unless they have a family member that is willing to pay for their keep behind bars for the rest of their lives.
