No wonder it was so easy for terrorists to attack us! Ideas like Mr. Spitzer’s make the target on our backs even bigger! First of all, illegal immigrants are not likely to have any “valid” passport as many of them gain passage to the US by sneaking across our southern border. This has become an open door not only for Latin American immigrants but those from other areas of the world who see the ease with which it can be done through Mexico. A driver’s license serves as proof of residency and allows one to board an aircraft. Are the illegals just going to hand over this supposed “valid” passport for a driver license or will they be subject to the same testing that most states require. Perhaps testing is not required in New York? I guess next thing we will see is Habitat for Humanity building communities for the illegals. I have no problem with immigration, but do it legally. If one wants the privilege of living here, pay taxes and learn to speak the language like everyone else. I am tired of footing the bill for illegals!

One of the significant differences between my ancestors (who came over in the 1850’s) and the immigrants coming in today is that when they came into the country, they did so legally. They did not sneak into the country.

I’ve often heard people pull out the rationalization about how we’re all immigrants, to justify letting the current “immigrants” into the country. That is not a valid argument for a variety of reasons. I fully support immigration-legal immigration. We have a system in place to allow immigration. Use it to come here, just like our ancestors did.

Also, remember this is not 1850 or even 1920. Times have changed, what was reasonable 100 years ago is not reasonable today.

As for the line about Americans not wanting to do the jobs the illegals are doing, some of that may be true. But, if there was not a ready supply of cheap illegal immigrants to provide that labor, the employers might be motivated to find a way to find the help they need; such as through better pay, sponsoring people from other countries with work visas or increasing the use of automation. All are valid means to address the labor shortage. They all seem to work. (if you don’t think sponsoring people from other countries works well, go to any theme park in the US and find out how many of the workers are from other parts of the world, especially eastern europe. When faced with labor shortages, cause our own college kids didn’t want to work at the theme parks, they set up programs to recruit and bring people in on work visas. It seems to work very well.)

What I and many others are saying is not because we are full of “hatred and bile”. We just don’t agree with illegal immigration. Wanting people to follow the rules doesn’t make us haters. That type of comment is the last refuge of people who don’t have logical arguments in favor of their position. Accuse the other person of being a bad person, just because we don’t agree with your position. If a logical and reasonable argument can be made why, in todays world, with all its issues, we should have completely open borders, I’d listen to it and maybe be persuaded. But don’t tell me that just because I don’t agree with you that I am full of hate. Most countries enforce their immigrant policies much more than we do-just look at what the Mexican government does with people trying to get into their country from their southern border. They are pretty brutal in how they treat illegals there. Oh, and by the way, I have a brother who is a legal immigrant in Germany. He followed all the rules to be admitted there, including a work permit etc., before he established residence there.

    Sami,
well put man. This is where the illegal immigrant issue gets skewed. The logic of equating those who wait in line, play by the rules and contribute to those who try to circumvent the legal process. My grandparents came from Italy, they learned the language and made sure their children learned English. They paid their dues and followed the road to legal immigration. They were proud to be considered American and learn English. Today, we must cater to illegals, be tolerant of their culture and in many states must be tolerant of their language and they are offended if we cannot provide services in their native language. This all leads to animosity on both sides. We Americans are getting tired of having to comprise our way of life to accomodate immigrants. It used to be that those immigrating to the U.S. would try to adjust to the American way of life.

I hope that they advertise this in the Spanish speaking newspapers here in California. Maybe we can get rid of a bunch of illegals as they can move to NYC now to get their license as we still don’t allow them out here yet.

All radio, television stations, and newspapers need to let all of our illegals know that New York has a special on real drivers licenses. The cops here don’t honor the ones they buy at the flea markets anymore. Maybe Amtrak could run some one way specials to New York to help out too.

It used to be that those immigrating were grateful for the opportunity to do so, however there is a new generation of immigrants that are of the opinion of entitlement to be here & be given all the social benefits that used to be granted to those that would make the transition to become an American Citizen.

I do not wish any human ill fate, however I do feel that if something isn’t done to curb the influx of these folks with their give me everything mentality that we are allowing our nation to become overrun by them & by those that simply do not care about anything but the votes they can sway to keep them in office. I hope that the day is not coming that they will find out they have sold our nation to the lowest bidders, but I feel if we do not get good people in the government offices that this is exactly where we are headed…

I have a few two cents to add:

    (1) If you want to become a citizen please go through the proper channels like everyone else. Some of things I have heard is that it is expensive and takes too long. Well, U.S. citizenship is a prize and a source of pride so anything worth having should take a while. It’s called persistence and hard work and if you stay here you’ll need to develop it.

    (2) How come being an illegal automatically allows you to take a day of work and protest across the country when (a) you’re ILLEGAL and therefore under the Constitution shouldn’t be guaranteed the right to free assemly

    (3) The case of the young lady who sought refuge in the church to fight deportation (they did send her back). I was VERY offended that people were comparing her to Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks was Black and a CITIZEN. She paid taxes and exercised her God-given rights and civil rights. Puleeeeeze.

    (3) Yes, this country was founded on immigration but we established laws and a government to regulate our actions and were made citizens. Mexico should make its own country better and it looks to me like the lesser educated (not to be racist but 90% of immigrants have to take what jobs they can get) are being shipped to America while the more educated and elite make Mexico their own private playground.

    (4) Some people were forced here. Mexicans were not forced here. You came of your own accord but you have to play by the rules too.

    (5) Some people may post racist things and the racial epithets are wrong but what is so wrong with going through the proper channels and paying taxes like the rest of us instead of believing that everyone should fall on their news and be GRATEFUL that you do the job that no one else wants to do. Once Blacks became citizens we do all the things the majority represented in this country do. Hispanics are not dying for the right to vote, there are no german shepards being sent after you and no firehoses spraying the daylights out of you.

    (6) Every group has had it own struggles for acceptance – Blacks, Jews, the Irish, the Italians, etc. It’s Hispanics turn but it’s more like gimme, gimme, gimme and let me stay a non taxpaying illegal alien and don’t make me pay into the system. You have to pay to play and if you don’t want to pay then as far as I concerned if you do become a citizen and say they make you pay back taxes for the generations of your relatives that have been here, we will see how many immigrants will want to stay then. If you fear deportation so much then act right. It’s not hard. I get sick and tired of the “I fear so much” and “we can’t come out of the shadows, “I can’ drive without fear”. You eat without fear, you get medical attention without fear, etc. PLEASE!!!

I love the quote and the P.C. term is completely interchangeable with Religion.

“Religious and religious zealotry is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which
holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd
    by the clean end.”
