Insurance Services Office: Iowa’s Storm Damage Reaches $235 Million

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) recently released estimated damages for Iowa since it was hit in May by devasting tornadoes and widespread flooding.

ISO estimates that tornadoes and floods that have struck Iowa since May 25 have caused $235 million worth of damage. The number was gleaned from the 27,000 claims filed. But those estimates don’t extend to flood damage because that insurance is available almost solely from the federal National Flood Insurance Plan.

According to earlier estimates many Iowans did not opt to purchase flood insurance and those homeowners and business owners will likely look to disaster funds from the federal government for help in rebuilding, experts say. At this writing Iowa has 70 counties listed as federal disaster areas.
