Jury Awards Montana Woman $1.75M for Damaged Home

A woman will receive $1.75 million from two companies after a drainage system they installed caused extensive damage to her Billings, Mont., home.

The Billings Gazette reports Oakland Home Builders Corporation, Gary Oakland, the CEO and chairman of The Oakland Companies, and Treasure State Plumbing and Heating Corporation must pay Carla Ova $240,000 in damages for breach of contract, negligence and personal injury. Ova has also been awarded $1.5 million in punitive damages.

Oakland could not be reached for comment.

The settlement decided by a jury Friday brought an end to almost seven years of litigation.

The complaint, filed in 2008, claims that Oakland and Treasure State installed a sump pump and drain system in Ova’s home that caused the home’s foundation to sink.

Ova has since sold the home.
