San Diego Mall Sued for Parking Lot Deaths

A lawsuit alleges a San Diego, Calif., shopping mall was negligent in not providing better security measures that might have prevented the Christmas Eve shooting deaths of three people in its parking lot.

The Los Angeles Times reports Wednesday that the suit claims mall security cameras at Westfield Mission Valley mall were not working and security personnel did a poor job of patrolling the lot.

A spokesman for the mall’s owner, Westfield Centers, declined comment.

The suit was filed on behalf of the families of the three victims – Ilona Flint, Salvatore Belvedere and Gianni Belvedere.

Last month the suspected gunman, 29-year-old Carlo Mercado, was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial and sent to a mental hospital.
