Los Angeles to Settle Police Death Lawsuit for $5M

August 22, 2014

Los Angeles will pay $5 million to the family of a disabled veteran who was killed by police in a shooting captured on live television.

City News Service says the City Council agreed Wednesday to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit over the death of Brian Beaird of Oceanside.

The 51-year-old National Guard veteran led police on a nearly hour-long chase on Dec. 13 after they tried to stop him for reckless driving. The pursuit ended when the Corvette hit another car, seriously injuring the other driver, then spun onto a downtown sidewalk.

The unarmed Beaird was shot after he staggered out of the car. His father witnessed the killing on TV.

A call seeking comment from the family’s attorney, Dale K. Galipo, wasn’t immediately returned.
