Utah Oil Recycler to Pay $70,000 for 2012 Fire

An oil recycling company that caught fire in 2012 has agreed to pay $70,000 in state fines for fueling the blaze by neglecting safety requirements.

State regulators say Rock Canyon Oil LLC failed to follow 19 provisions in its state-issued permits.

General Manager Gary Maxwell tells the Salt Lake Tribune his company made mistakes but has corrected them.

Regulators in November said the plant near Utah Lake covered a heat sensor with an insulated can, among other violations that caused extensive damage to firefighters’ equipment.

Meanwhile, federal officials are investigating whether the company supplied defective diesel that fouled an Amtrak locomotive. Maxwell has denied providing that fuel.

The Utah hazardous waste board voted on the proposed state settlement Thursday.

The company recycles used motor oil into fuels and lubricants.
