Arizona Officials Issue Wildfire Pre-Evacuation Notice

A wildfire in the Huachuca Mountains in southeastern Arizona has prompted authorities to warn residents to prepare for a possible evacuation.

Cochise County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carol Capas says the fire started around 3:30 p.m. Saturday but a burn estimate wasn’t immediately available.

The Sheriff’s Office is advising residents in the Choctaw and Calle Encinas areas to gather valuables, money and medications in case they need to evacuate.

Capas says a few hundred homes could be in the path of the fire. After backburn operations, she says authorities are confident it won’t jump over Buffalo Soldier Trail, a main thoroughfare, or threaten the most residential areas.

Coronado National Forest spokeswoman Heidi Schewel says the so-called Aerostat Fire is burning grass and brush.

Fire officials have ordered crews, engines and other resources.
