Los Angeles Council Seeks Safety Barriers on Boardwalk

The Los Angeles City Council wants new street barriers to block unwanted vehicles from getting onto the Venice Beach boardwalk.

A council motion approved unanimously Tuesday asks police and city officials to immediately erect temporary barriers at the most dangerous intersections along the boardwalk.

The council also asked for a two-week study that will assess where to install permanent posts or other barriers to keep cars away from pedestrians.

The vote comes three days after a rogue driver maneuvered around a vehicle barrier and plowed into tourists and vendors on the boardwalk, killing an Italian honeymooner and injuring 16 others.

A transient with a history of run-ins with police – Nathan Louis Campbell – is in custody for investigation of murder.
