Workers Removing Washington I-5 Bridge Wreckage

Workers are still removing pieces of Washington’s Interstate 5 bridge that fell into the Skagit River on May 23 when an oversize truck hit a girder.

A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, Peter Knudson, said Monday in an email that the on-site investigation continues this week as investigators document components as they are removed from the river.

An NTSB investigator traveled to the headquarters of Mullen Trucking in Aldersyde, Alberta, to gather information about the truck that was carrying the oversize load.

If the company is negligent the state could make a claim to recover damages, Washington Transportation Department spokesman Travis Phelps told The Daily Herald.

Traffic is detoured through Mount Vernon until a temporary bridge is in place.
