15 Years for Drunken Driving Death of Bicyclist in California

The driver of a Hummer that struck down and killed a Southern California bicyclist has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

Fifty-year-old Satnam Singh, the owner of a Santa Paula liquor store, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and drunken driving causing serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors say Singh’s blood-alcohol level was nearly five times the legal limit to drive when his sport utility vehicle swerved into a Ventura bike lane last year and killed 20-year-old Nick Haverland.

The Hummer left the crash scene at 80 mph.

The Ventura County Star says Singh was sentenced on Wednesday. The judge says he must first serve two years in prison for the DUI conviction before he can start serving the sentence of 15 years to life.
