Info May Have Been Stolen From Los Angeles Ambulance Riders

November 30, 2012

Authorities say more than 900 people who rode in Los Angeles Fire Department ambulances may have had their personal information stolen.

The city attorney’s office says the IRS is investigating whether Social Security numbers, birth dates and other information were accessed by an employee of a company that handled LA ambulance billing last year.

The Los Angeles Times says a Fire Department notification letter warned that patient information was used to file phony tax returns to obtain illegal refunds.

Potential victims are being urged to call the IRS to determine whether fake returns were filed in their names.
