Gold Taken From California Courthouse Valued at $1.2M

Large chunks of gold stolen in February from a lobby display case at a far Northern California courthouse have been appraised at more than $1.2 million.

The Siskiyou Daily News reports that Siskiyou County officials brought in a gemologist who determined the value with the help of smaller pieces of gold that were left behind in the display case.

The county is now seeking reimbursement from its insurance carrier.

Thieves broke into the courthouse in Yreka on Feb. 1, smashed the case and made off with the gold. Much of the gold in the county’s collection was donated by miners and other residents over the past century. Some pieces were also purchased with county funds.
