A disabled Gulf War veteran is getting a $20,000 settlement in a federal lawsuit claiming he was repeatedly fined for keeping a companion dog in his Park City, Utah, condo.
The lawsuit claims the Fox Point at Redstone Association, a property management company and a property manager refused to accommodate Thomas Burton, who wanted to keep a small dog to cope with depression and anxiety disorder.
The lawsuit alleges the condo managers violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to waive pet fees and insurance requirements.
As part of the settlement announced Monday by the Department of Justice, the defendants will attend fair housing training and agree to implement a policy that doesn’t charge fees to owners of service animals.
