Wyoming Considers Letting Drivers Exceed Speed Limit When Passing

February 22, 2012

The Wyoming House has given preliminary approval to a bill that would allow drivers to exceed the posted speed limit by up to 10 miles per hour when passing another vehicle.

The House on Monday endorsed a bill sponsored by Rep. Del McOmie, a Lander Republican.

It would let motorists exceed the speed limit in order to pass another vehicle that’s traveling at less than the maximum legal speed on a two-lane highway with a posted speed limit of 50 mile per hour or greater. The passing vehicle would be required to get back into the right-hand lane and resume driving at the posted speed limit as soon as possible.

McOmie says it’s a safety hazard for a number of other vehicles get backed up behind a slow-moving vehicle.
