Probation for Oregon Woman in Church Theft

A woman who pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated theft in connection with $120,000 that disappeared from a Lebanon, Ore., church will not go to prison and won’t have to reimburse the church.

Circuit Judge Daniel Murphy sentenced 62-year-old Molly Louise Marteney on Thursday to 36 months of supervised probation and 200 hours of community service.

The First Assembly of God church did not ask for restitution, but the court ordered Marteney to reimburse the church’s insurance carrier for the $10,000 it paid the church.

Reached by phone later, Senior Pastor Ted Boatsman said he had no comment.

When the money disappeared in 2007, Marteney held several positions at the church, including treasurer and bookkeeper. She also was a church member.

The Democrat-Herald reports that Marteney entered her plea at a Jan. 26 settlement conference that the newspaper was not allowed to attend.
