Police say a motorist who plummeted off a San Diego freeway overpass during the evening rush-hour may have been attempting suicide.
Officer Dave Gibson says the car crashed through a guardrail Friday and landed in the southbound lanes of Interstate 805 about 100 feet below.
The San Diego Union Tribune reports the driver was freed from the wreckage and taken to a hospital with major trauma. The driver’s name was not released.
A witness described the airborne vehicle as like a stunt from a movie. She said it was “incredible” that the car didn’t hit anyone in lanes below.
Gibson tells the newspaper it appears the driver may have been trying to attempt suicide.
All but one lane of the southbound freeway was blocked for about an hour as the wreckage was removed and the incident was investigated.
