Supreme Court Rules Against Bakery Shop Owner

The Wyoming Supreme Court has ruled that the owner of a bake shop destroyed in a fire in downtown Cheyenne must repay the city for the cost of demolishing and removing the ruins.

The court upheld a lower court ruling that Mary Coonts is responsible for repaying the City more than $104,000. The city says it had no choice but to demolish the building following the December 2004 fire.

Coonts had argued that the she didn’t owe the city anything for the demolition because the city didn’t give her enough time to take care of it herself.

City officials say they believe the court ruling will allow two major downtown construction projects in the same area to move ahead.
