Agreed that this was a well written and thought out post. I also agree with this position.

First off, I\’m surprised that a good portion of the folks out there are surprised that the victim didn\’t see the dog in the truck. I\’m not surprised by this at all. If the truck windows were tinted in anyway and the dog was sitting fairly still, lying down, in the back seat, whatever, the dog may have not been readily noticed. For many years I worked as a drive-up teller at a credit union where we gave out dog biscuits to dogs who were in the car. There were quite a few instances where a dog owner had to ask for a biscuit because I couldn\’t see the dog in the back seat if it wasn\’t active and the car windows had a tint. Of curse, I did also attempt to feed a fur coat once, but, you see my point.

Also, in October I had a near miss with a dog and its owner. I merely went to introduced myslef to my neighbor who I saw coming home as I was moving some items into my newly purchased condo. I extended my hand to shake his hand and the dog nearly bit my hand off if I hadn\’t jerked it back. It went crazy barking, growling–yikes! Up to that point the dog seemed very well behaved as I approached.

I guess I was too aggressive in extending my hand out for a handshake. I feel that in some cases, careful or not, we won\’t always know the reaction of someone\’s pet and they can be unpredictable. I don\’t see anyone at fault in the case here. It\’s just an extremely unfortunate situation. Should the law be changed? Yes, of course. If it was the gal\’s child who threw a rock and he/she put out a window, eye, it wouldn\’t matter that it had never happened before. If it\’s your child or pet, you should be responsible in some way. In any case, it is admirable to hear that these two friends settled this without a law suit. Law or not, more people should do what is right no matter what the law compels one to do.

Good thing Jewel didn\’t approach the truck – as aggressive as her responses are to other posts here, surely her lips would have been bitten off

needs to change their user name. Practically wishing violence on someone isn\’t very kind. Sorry if I tried to defend the victim. Next time, like you, I will wish they get their lips bitten off.

    Is that better for you?

Well put Gina. I especially liked your anecdote about being a bank teller. \”Of course, I did also attempt to feed a fur coat once, but, you see my point.\” That had me rolling. Thank you =)

I\’d hate to see what you\’d do with a real problem. It\’s like some people never leave their livingroom.
I guess you had to have owned dogs to know how to act around them. It\’s like trying to explain what it\’s like to have kids if you never have.
    Impossible to do.
Good luck with the splinters, Jewel, and that hair lip remark IS FUNNY !

Hair lip remark was funny? Hmm, didn\’t even make sense. You don\’t know me. Is that how you react to people in the real world? I bet your face has been on the other end of a fist a few times then, I\’d imagine. But okay, I\’ll just take it as you don\’t know what you are talking about. Did you READ my posts? Obviously not. So, again I am reminded how people in the world are ignorant (or just plain stupid).

Oh, in case maybe you MIGHT get it this time, maybe the woman DID NOT see the dog, which was my point. Oh, and I hope you don\’t have kids because that thought scares me. If they grow up to be just like you, this country is in a world of danger. Sorry if your lack of intelligence clouds your comprehension of my posts. Do you get this one now?

    Great! Thanks :)

the suspense is killing me..what type of truck do you navigate, my main point is ..Her you would think being a dog owner would be a little more aware when a stranger approaches so as to prevent such a tradegy as what happened to her friend. I \’ve owned dogs and I can tell you whenever someone approached us, I always kept my eye on my friend to prevent such an accident. Now please tell me what you drive !!!

Did I say anything against your comment tom? Uhm, no.

Just thought the stereotype was unneccessary. Although, without all the extraneous crap (beer drinking, cell phone, etc) you made a good point.

And, no I don\’t drive a truck. I drive a 4 door sedan. Any insight for me?

    Thanks :)

I believe this is a classic case of everyone wanting to put responsibility on the dog owner. If she was hugging a friend, she knew she owned the dog. It was a sad thing that happened, but why should the dog owner be responsible for making sure there is insurance to cover possible injuries. The dog owner was not negligent, this was an accident.

If someone owns a dog that has a history of being aggresive, yes they should be required to carry liability insurance to cover accidents, but even in this case, the dog wasn\’t necessarily aggressive, just startled most probably. Even my little Chihuahua would bite in that situation, and he could cause some major injuries if he bit your face. All 3 teeth of his!!! I am so sorry she was injured, but the responsiblity is on her, not the dog owner.
