Panama City leaders are cracking down on scooter rental companies.
The Panama City News Herald reports that the city council has approved an ordinance to require the companies to carry the same minimum liability insurance required for automobile owners in the state. The ordinance will be enacted pending final approval by the council in July.
Scooter rental companies say the move will hurt their businesses because many of their customers are younger than 21 and insurance companies will not insure those drivers.
City leaders say the insurance is important for the safety and of the companies, their customers and other drivers.
