South Carolina Town’s Residents Say State Missed Storm Debris

Four months after an ice storm paralyzed South Carolina, some Orangeburg residents say the state has yet to pick up storm debris from their neighborhood.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that residents along two streets that are maintained by state say crews never came to pick up the debris.

The Transportation Department says all debris from state roads was removed by a May 9 deadline. The department says it’s up to residents to pick up any debris put on roads after that.

But residents along two streets say the piles of brown limbs and branches came from the cleanup after the February ice storm. They worry the debris is so dry it could catch fire if someone threw a cigarette butt.
