The State Emergency Management Division, the S.C. Highway Patrol and other agencies are preparing for the worst by practicing hurricane evacuation plans.
The agencies are practicing hurricane lane reversals on Tuesday on Interstate 26, U.S. routes 21, 278 and 501 and on South Carolina 544. In the event of a storm, reversing lanes leading toward the coast helps to speed evacuations.
During the daylong exercise, law officers and emergency personnel will be at interstate exits and on the shoulders of highways. But no lanes will actually be reversed.
The 2014 hurricane season began on Sunday and continues through November.
