A Louisville, Ky., company has developed a way it says will help prevent distracted driving.
Mobile Life Solutions developed an app called TextLimit, which licensed Kentucky and West Virginia drivers can download free to smartphones.
Company President David Meers said in a news release the app works with GPS in the smartphone to determine how fast a vehicle is going. Beyond a certain speed, texting and most calling functions are deactivated on the phone. Emergency 911 call functions remain active.
The app can only be programmed by the administrator, such as a parent or fleet supervisor. It also keeps an eye on vehicle speed and location.
The app became available Tuesday at http://www.textlimit.com , and is free with the codes NOTEXTKY or NOTEXTWV.
