Mississippi City Receives Approval to Donate Katrina Cottages

The City of Greenwood, Miss., has approval to donate small homes to a nonprofit organization for low-income housing.

Senate Bill 2918 was signed Monday by Gov. Phil Bryant.

The city has 26 Katrina cottages, small homes used to provide housing on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The state gave the cottages to Greenwood in 2011.

Under state law, the city can’t give the cottages directly to private citizens.

The bill will allow the city to donate the cottages to the Greenwood-Leflore Fuller Center for Housing, which would take charge of the project.

Officials tell The Greenwood Commonwealth that the first phase of the project will place 11 cottages in the Baptist Town neighborhood as part of an ongoing revitalization project.
