Kentucky Bill seeks to Ban Cell Phone Use in School and Construction Zones

Cell phone use would be restricted in school and construction zones under a bill that has passed the Kentucky House.

The measure also would double the fines for texting while driving.

The House voted 62-32 Friday to send the proposal to the Senate.

Rep. Terry Mills, the bill’s sponsor, says distracted driving has caused many deadly crashes in the state.

The bill would prohibit motorists from dialing hand-held cell phones while driving through school zones when the caution lights are flashing, or when passing through highway construction zones.

The bill was amended to exempt drivers using hands-free devices.
