This week mark’s Alabama School Bus Safety Week.
The state Department of Education is using the week to urge motorists to be especially cautious around buses and school children. The department’s public transportation administrator, Brad Holley, says transportation employees strive to provide safe travel for more than 377,000 students each day.
The department reports that there were 272 collisions involving school buses during the 2012-2013 school year. They resulted in 10 injuries and one death. The department says most student fatalities occur during loading and unloading buses, and younger children are more vulnerable than older students.
