Charleston Most Dangerous County for Collisions

For the third straight year, Charleston County is the most dangerous in South Carolina for vehicle crashes.

AAA Carolinas announced on Tuesday that Greenville, Richland and Horry counties were right behind.

The auto club reported that during 2012, there were more than 12,000 collisions in Charleston County, or about 342 for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled. That’s 55 percent higher than the state average.

Williamsburg County was the deadliest county based on vehicle miles traveled followed by Oconee, Allendale, Saluda and Laurens counties.

Those rural counties together had 65 fatal crashes. That’s about 8 percent of the South Carolina total even though those counties only had about 4.5 percent of total vehicle miles traveled.

The motor club said that nationally, rural roads account for about two-thirds of fatal accidents.
