Mississippi Tornado Debris Cleanup Coming to End

Nearly three months after a Feb. 10 tornado hit the Hattiesburg and Lamar County, Miss., the debris cleanup operations are winding down.

Lamar County Road Manager Jake Sones tells The Hattiesburg American debris cleanup operations will end this week.

Since the tornado, Lamar County crews have collected 25,293 cubic yards of vegetative debris, along with 3,382 tons of construction debris. Sones says the final total on the amount of debris will be tallied next week.

In Hattiesburg, John Brown, assistant to the mayor, said the city has completed its primary work that was assessed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after the storm. Thus far, city crews have collected more than 35,000 cubic yards of debris.
