Although there are more bicycles than ever on South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island, the number of accidents involving bikes was down last year.
There are plans to make things even safer.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that bicycle advocates estimate that there are more than 20,000 bikes for rent by visitors to the island. That’s almost twice as many as seven years ago. Last year, there were 16 bike-car accidents, down from 26 the previous year.
By the end of next year five more bike paths that are a total of three miles in length will be built. In addition, 30 new information kiosks will be built to help riders find their way around the resort island.
