Deal Reached on Change to North Carolina Workers’ Comp Law

Legislators say they don’t expect any obstacles when they consider a bill allowing workers to make sure their employers carry workers’ compensation insurance on them.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported officials from three interested groups agreed to undo a change to a law that made data on employers and their insurance policies private.

The announcement of an agreement among N.C. Rate Bureau, the state Industrial Commission and the N.C. Press Association came Wednesday during a meeting of a special legislative committee studying workers’ compensation.

The News & Observer reported in April that as many as 30,000 employers required to carry insurance don’t. That can leave those workers with several problems, including without guaranteed payment for lost work, injuries that will never heal and costly medical bills.
