December 10, 2012

Florida Highway Patrol has issued more than a dozen traffic citations to drivers involved in a chain reaction of collisions that injured more than 50 people.

No one died in the Oct. 5 crashes that closed a section of Interstate 75 for six hours along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Authorities say 52 people were injured, including 22 who were hospitalized.

FHP officials said Friday that they had finished their investigation into the series of crashes. Investigators found that 53 vehicles were involved in 21 crashes on the highway near the Sarasota-Manatee county line.

According to FHP, bad weather and driver error contributed to the crashes. FHP has issued 19 traffic citations to drivers involved in the collisions.
