Mother of East Carolina University Coed Killed in Wreck Sues Sorority

October 5, 2012

The mother of an East Carolina University student killed in a wreck is suing a sorority, citing hazing as a factor in her daughter’s death.

Bernadette Carter accuses the national office of Delta Sigma Theta, its ECU chapter and its members of depriving the 2010 pledges of sleep and forcing them to engage in demeaning activities.

Victoria T’nya-Ann Carter was one of two ECU students killed in November 2010 when the car she was riding in with three others crashed into a tree in Greenville. A second student in the car died the next day and a third passenger survived.

ECU put the sorority on a two-year probation. The national organization suspended the school’s chapter until at least 2015.

A spokeswoman for the sorority wasn’t immediately available for comment Wednesday.
