Officials say two men were injured when a four-story parking garage collapsed on the west side of the Broward County Courthouse.
Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue officials say the garage collapse about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday during an ongoing demolition process. A contractor received minor injuries and a security guard was taken to the hospital after being hit by a piece of debris.
Broward Chief Judge Peter Weinstein told the South Florida SunSentinel he heard a very loud boom and felt a vibration inside his courthouse office.
Weinstein says he’s concerned about the courthouse, which is adjacent to the parking structure and is “not in very great shape.” He says the county will be asked to make sure the building hasn’t been compromised.
Officials don’t know what caused the collapse.
