Florida A&M Student’s Family Plans Lawsuit Over Death

The family of a Florida A&M University band member who died following a football game plans to file a lawsuit.

Attorney Rick Mitchell told the school’s Board of Trustees during a meeting Wednesday Robert Champion’s family sent a letter indicating they plan to take legal action over his death. Mitchell represents the board.

Champion died on Nov. 19 aboard a band bus following the game against rival Bethune Cookman in Orlando. Investigators say hazing played a role in the death of the 26-year-old Champion, who vomited shortly before he became unresponsive.

The drum major’s death led to the firing of FAMU’s band leader and the temporary shuttering of the band. Four students who were dismissed following the death are still taking classes on campus.
